If you are like me, you like to eat out. It is a great way to relax, connect with friends and family, experience your local culture, and of course, eat. Eating out has just as many cultural and social components as dietary ones, and if you are trying to stick to a restrictive diet, it can be a little tricky. Nobody wants to be the person at the table explaining to everyone why they won't or can't partake of a certain kind of food.

I have been here before, and I have a couple tips that might help keeping those phase 1 resolutions a little easier.

1) Avoid the bread and/or chips. No one will look at you funny if you do. Try to talk to everyone at the table instead of grazing before a meal. If you are on a phase 2 diet, flour tortillas in moderation are ok, and guacamole is an excellent phase 1 food. Hot sauce is great too, as long as it isn't sweetened with sugar.

2) Have a salad for an appetizer instead of soup if it is an option. Most restaurants have made it a point to have a great variety of salads. Usually this is where I'll be a little lenient on myself; I'll use a little dressing even if it isn't totally phase 1, but I usually get it on the side. Olive oil and lemon are a great substitute if you are being very strict. Soups very often contain some form of potato, corn, or other ingredients you want to avoid on phase 1. If there is a phase 1 appetizer like grilled shrimp, opt for that.

3) Look for the simplest items on the menu. Grilled chicken, seared steak, and grilled fish are all great options and usually will come with seasonal vegetables. The less ingredients in your entree, the easier it will be to stick to phase 1. Avoid any dish that says pasta, corn, mushroom or potatoes. Your options will narrow very quickly on the menu, and it will make it easier to choose something healthy.

4) Drink water.

5) Don't even look at the dessert menu. You'll save money and the second you walk out of the restaurant, you'll be glad you did.

You can stay on Phase 1 and eat out...I do!!!
Find restaurants that have salads...and tell the server what you want on it. I have a favorite restaurant that knows when I come in....I always get "my salad"...the cooks in the back know it by heart!
Romaine lettuce with cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, red and green peppers, eggs, and grilled chicken~ DELICIOUS
You really can stay on track and eat out.....

I always request that the restaurant substitute vegetables for the potato... unless the vegetable of the day is corn or a mixed corn blend, then I ask for salad...
I have never had a problem with getting a substitution... even when the menu says no substitutions- most restaurants are very willing to meet the needs of the customer (I only tell the wait staff I can't eat something and they often assume it's because of allergies, so they make adjustments...)

The manager at one restaurant always makes a spinach, broccoli and carrot blend for me, regardless of what the vegetable du jour is... she understands that I eat phase one because she asked me how I had lost so much weight... she was impressed with how eating phase one not only helped me lose weight, but also helped improve my health in general- especially the reduction in pain and the fact that I no longer have to use a cane to assist me in walking!

It also helps if you know how the restaurants prepare some of their menu choices... e.g.: at IHOP, they use egg substitutes and add pancake batter to their omelets to make them "fluffier"... however you can request that they use real eggs and not add the pancake batter... you can also order items ala carte there... the individual prices of items aren't on the menu, but the wait staff has the pricing if you ask... it's less expensive to order that way instead of a "package" breakfast since I don't want the hash browns, pancakes and toast offered with most breakfast choices...

Terrilee and Michael are right... You can stay on Phase 1 and eat out- you just have to be willing to make and ask for informed choices...

I was looking online for natural ways to cure ovarian cysts, many people posted a daily recipe of molasses, beet juice, aloe juice and carrot juice. Are any of these bad for the phase 1 diet?? I really want to start both or one asap,Thanks

10 years ago I had two kidney stone attacks with in two years of each other. A nurse told me to drink cranburry juice every day which would disolve kidney stones in the blood. I have been drinking the juice every since once a day and had no kidney stone attacks since. But the cranburry juice I am able to buy is Kirkland sold through Costco and I see the lable says it has sugar in it. What can I do¿
