Amongst my close friends, I've often referred to 2009 as 2008's hangover. 2008 was a gluttonous year for me, particularly in terms of health. In 2009, I reaped the consequences of a year of poor diet, lack of exercise, bad sleep patterns, and lack of supplementation. But aside from a few failed attempts over the course of the year to kickstart back into a healthy lifestyle, I did little to correct my errant ways. I think the important thing to learn from the two years in tandem is that change is not as easy as wanting to be healthy. In other words, I felt crummy for a whole year as a result of a year of poor health choices, and that feeling crummy sapped my motivation to change my eating habits, to get up and exercise, etc. That is what is known as a negative feedback cycle - you feel bad, so you do nothing which makes you feel worse. This is a slippery slope if you are trying to get healthy.
I'm not a fan of the entire self help genre. I think change starts with a desire for change that manifests itself as a well thought out plan and is held together through determination. Encouragement from friends and family definitely makes the process easier. But many times, you just have to dig down deep.
I do a number of things for know the cause. I help manage the website, I record the audio books, I write segments for the show, I research things for Doug, I help Doug sift through all the literature that lands on his desk, and obviously, I write for this blog. Part of my job for 2010 is to make this blog interesting, vibrant and interactive. One of the ways I want to do that is to update you on my quest for good health. I'm going to come up with a clear, concise health plan based on exercise, Doug's Phase 1 Diet, and a good supplement regimen with specific goals. When I come up with that plan, I'm going to post it on the blog and keep the readers updated.
I'm excited about this year!
