Many people who are new the Phase 1 Diet often get confused by which foods to avoid. Sugar is a no-brainer; virtually every diet limits or prohibits sugar all together. But what about whole grains? Aren't those loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber? Or corn - corn is a plant; it has got to be healthy! It is downright un-American to claim otherwise! What about potatoes and pasta? Aren't those foods that active people such as runners should eat regularly?

Doug has written a number of books explaining why these foods, that are often encouraged by conventional nutritional wisdom (as seen in the food pyramid), are not only unhealthy, but may be dangerous. Fungi and their mycotoxins often contaminate such starchy, carbohydrate laden foods, especially when they are stored in a silo for any length of time. Those mycotoxins are capable of causing very serious diseases. Fungi are also capable of infecting human tissue, and eating foods such as corn, grain, potatoes and pasta give those fungi the very foods they need to survive.

Doug has outlined the way we should eat with his Phase 1 diet. But, if you are like me, and you will eat pretty much anything, you often encounter foods that Doug has neither specifically outlawed or allowed. In other words, there are some questionable foods. You can encounter this culinary gray area anywhere from the produce aisle to your plate at a restaurant.

Over the next couple days, I want to pick out some foods that Doug may or may not have specifically put on the Phase 1 Diet. After all, variety is the spice of life; the more food you can entertain your taste buds with, the more likely you are to stick to the diet. If you have questions about specific foods, leave me a comment and I'll try to answer questions about all of them!

What about Agave Nectar or Blue Agave Nectar, as sweetener? It says low glycemic on the bottle.

Just started the diet...and I'm already tired of eggs for breakfast. What other "breakfast-type" foods are on the diet? Are all cheeses bad? What about organic black beans? Organic quinoa? So many questions :)

Is almond flour and coconut flour okay? On phase 2 it says you can have flour tortillas? Would it be better to have wheat or white? I don't understand why flour tortillas would be allowed could you please explain. Thanks

Can I eat pickled foods, not sweet pickled, but hot or dill pickled veggies. Also wondering about small amounts of cheese. Love cheese & eggs. Particularly questioning cheddar, swiss & feta. And finally salsa....love that with eggs too!

What about gluten free beer? Also, sugar free cinnamon rolls are delish!!!! I know they may have some carbs, but they're sweetened with agave. One time I brought a dozen of them home from Mother's Market...only to find that my wife ate half the dozen! I gotta find a nice way to tell her to get to the gym! She's getting a little too "Comforatable"...if you know what I mean.

I really like that you are doing this! I've started a blog for my expository writing class in college and I am writing about fungus growth and foods that are harmful to the body. Hopefully it will get the word out about letting people know exactly what they are putting into their mouths.

I honestly, would really like to know more details on how corn can feed the fungus in your body? Does it have yeast in it?

Check out my blog and comment:

aussiesrus, stay away from Agave nectar! I used that stuff for some time since it was "supposedly" a healthy alternative to sugar and harmful sugar substitutes - well, lo and behold, as it turns out it consists of mostly HFCS, which is even WORSE then sugar!!!

I loved Agave and was shocked to hear that since it was recommended by a well known naturopath Dr. who is now un-recommending it btw.

Needless to say, after hearing that sad news I have been searching for something to replace Agave. I am currently using a couple of products made from chicory root called 'Just Like Sugar' and another called 'Sweet Fiber', not a fan of Stevia - too sweet for me. I'll probably take another look at the Xylitol sweeteners as well. I do miss my Agave though. :(

My boyfriend is a type 2 diabetic and has used the Phase 1 diet for 4-5 weeks and the sugar cravings became so physically overwhelming that he could not even sleep. He is hungry approximately every hour and cannot seem to curb the appetite or the sugar cravings. We understand that this is the fungus dying and demanding sugar, but do you have any recommendations as to how to deal with the overwhelming sugar cravings so he can stick to the diet?
