Pesticide Exposure and Increased Risk of Thyroid Problems

Exposures to pesticides can increase risk of asthma, some forms of cancer,  mental depression, and neurological problems such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.  Exposures to pesticides may also increase risk of thyroid problems. Thyroid problems are very common, with 5 to 9% of US adults having some form of thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism.

A study of 16,529 women in Iowa and North Carolina married to pesticide applicators reported that 12.5% had some form of thyroid problems and 6.9% had clinical hypothyroidism.  Exposure to organochlorine pesticides (such as aldrin, chlordane, DDT and lindane), fungicides (benomyl, captan, maneb) and the fumigant methylbromide were associated with significantly higher rates of thyroid problems.

I only use organic fert and then I use round-up for weed control, I am very careful in the use of round up. I live in the fla keys. I have been battling with hypothroyidism for 4 years. I did as much as I could herbally and used the p90x exercise program for 6 mo and was on the phase 1 diet also during that time. TSH #'s during that time went from 20 down to 13, that is as low as it got doing everything right.

Got a 2nd opinion in oct 2009 in wash dc. Told I had an autoimmune disease, Hasimotos. or just hormone (menopause) assoc problems. Ultra sound showed the slightly enlarged thyroid, blood work including indicatiors for t-3and t4 confirmined low thyroid.

Back down here, kept on syn-throid (.75) every day while staying on the Phase 3 diet for the last 8 mo. 8 weeks ago went for updated blood work, Discussed with local dr (AGAIN) poss fungus link. Tried to give him a copy of Dougs books, just the first one, I have all 3, including cookbook.

He declined, however, he had just had a patient who was diagnosed with yeast on his lungs and then moved to his heart, for 3 years he took diflucan 3 x's a day and was now totally yeast free. So Dr. was open to suggestion, I took advantage of it.

I left his office so happy, I had no synthroid presc, but I did have diflucan script in hand. 1 pill a week for 8 weeks. Just got results from TSH levels and in a panic count is now up to 70.77. COME ON! I do not believe in diseases with no cures, I trust in GOD to show me what I need to do and as a promise to my husband, I take the syntroid. Before local dr took me off it and gave me the diflucan the count was down to 1.0 within normal range.

Any help I can get or advice is appreciated. Keysherbs@aol.com
